Classification: Hourly / Non-Exempt

Responsibilities

  • Primary responsibilities are to perform structural fitting functions according to customer specifications and direction from Foreman/Supervisor.
  • Work safely and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Notify foreman or supervisor of any safety and/or structural issues as warranted.

Duties

  • Lays out, positions, aligns and fits together fabricated structural steel plate according to customer specifications and direction from Foreman/Supervisor.
  • Required to move parts into position, manually, by hoist or crane, and align parts, using jacks, etc.
  • May be required to remove high spots and cut bevels, using hand files, portable grinders, and/or cutting torch, as well as give directions to the welder to build up low spots or short pieces.
  • May, at times, be required to tack weld, as necessary.
  • Consults with foreman or supervisor regarding installation or repair problems, sequence of operations, and time required to complete repair and/or installation.
  • Attend safety meetings as required.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience and Training

  • Minimum one year experience as a structural fitter (shipyard experience preferred, but not required).
  • Be able to perform simple paperwork as required for filling out forms and logs.

Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Mandatory drug testing prior to employment, and will be subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol tests during employment.
  • Must be able to communicate and take directions from Foreman & Supervisor.
  • Must have good judgment skills, and a high-level work initiative.
  • Must be able to work independently, without direct supervision.
  • Must be able to meet strict attendance requirements.

Physical/Environmental Requirements

  • Barge chemical environment. Requires prolonged kneeling, standing, walking, twisting, climbing, and the ability to lift and carry in access of 120 lbs, assisted.
  • Ability to work in varied conditions (i.e.: heat, cold, rain, ice, snow, etc.), inside and outside.
  • Able to work in confined space, heights and operate equipment efficiently and safely.
